Assuming I still have my car, I'm really looking forward to the drive from Los Angeles to Chicago when I move this summer. Although it could be done in three grueling 10-hour days of driving, I thought I'd plan an extended road trip, taking 5-7 days. While there is the classic Route 66, the northern states of Idaho, Montana & Wyoming call to me most. I'd even be up for exploring the Dakotas.
Anyone have any experience or recommendations for a road trip to/through these areas? Both in the highways one takes and sites to see along the way? Come one, come all with your opinions & suggestions!

Most Excellent Road Trip

I have taken each of these routes, several times. I would go through Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. You should definitly drive through Yellowstone, so much wildlife. Also, South Dakota has some of the best cheesy tourist stops that you and Hugo would love...the Corn Palace is my favorite.
The green and orange routes, while quicker, are pretty boring. I would go for some sort of combo of the blue and pink routes
When my mom and I did this trip we pretty much took the orange route (with a small deviation because we went to Wisconsin first). We did it in 3 days and 2 nights and I would NOT recommend that. Take at least 4 days and 3 nights and enjoy the trip.
I actually really enjoyed going through AZ/UT/CO. They were beautiful!! KS/NE/IA are REALLY boring!!! The hardest part is that you will have to drive through those boring parts at the end of the trip when you are really tired.
We were actually going to do the southern route but changed at the last minute because it was right after Katrina and we thought it best to avoid those areas. Doing your full green route would be really long in one shot. I would say, hit the east coast on a different trip.
I have no recommendations but I'm already eager to see the pics that will result from said roadtrip! :)
I have to ditto ID/WY. Especially if you can do Yellowstone. I grew up a few hours from there, and it's amazing! Check out the Tetons, for sure...
Montana=heaven on earth. Go there.
I have done all of these routes as well.One route took us 10 days to get to Minnesota. Of course you have to go through montana, and stop at Billings and say hi to me. Corn palace? It was nice, but IT IS ALL ABOUT WALL DRUG! I would go with a pink and blue (does either hit Coeur D Alene?) combo. Is there really anything to see in ND?
The green route would be nice too, except for the fact that it would be August right? Go north young woman, go north.
i didnt want to lie. I hadnt done the east coast part of that green route lol-only to Toledo :)
